A few thoughts on #NoMorePage3

Yes. Agreed. NMP3 members do not think that sex workers are wrong, they do not think that nakedness is bad.
We simply don’t think that bare boobs in a national family newspaper is appropriate.

A Bit of Class

So. The Sun has dropped, or sort of dropped, Page 3 in it’s current incarnation, and feminists everywhere are either rejoicing or snarking.

I have seen so much snark last night and today. I like snark and am a champion of throwing shade, it’s kind of fun and most of us deserve it at some point.

But when all feminist debate is centred around being sarcy enough to score points on Twitter, it gets a bit daft and no good comes of it.

Particularly as a) actual debate is good for feminism, and b) it’s of course perfectly understandable that some people have concerns about the campaign and that some people want to voice those.

I got GMB trade union to back the No More Page 3 campaign, and I and the NUJ reps in my workplace also had The Sun removed from our break areas after our members complained…

Footballers, Prostitutes and Feminists

Not The News in Briefs

This week the story of Ched Evans, the Sheffield United footballer convicted of rape, has been all over the news. Debate has been centred around whether on release from prison he should get his old job back, and the feminist position has been largely that no, he shouldn’t: as a highly-paid footballer he has a privileged position as a role model to young people, especially boys, and his reinstatement would be to minimise the damage he has done and to reinforce a structural misogyny within football. There is broad agreement amongst feminists that the message this would send out would be detrimental to women as a whole.

Judging from the accounts of the case I have read, the 19 year-old victim was picked up in a drunken state by a man who then texted his friend that he’d ‘got a bird’. She was then taken to a pre-booked hotel room…

Bitter? Feel better.

Hold on to those feelings that keep you hating.

They’ll keep you strong and bitter, just like great coffee.

Don’t want to be happy with your life? Tell everyone that whatever happened to you wasn’t your fault or your responsibility. That way you can justify your daily misery with excuses about how life just happened to you.

Today I attack the debated topic of ‘No More Page 3’.

As a female I, of course, detest the page 3. The blaring of a woman’s body in a newspaper is not something you want to creep upon during your Sunday morning read.

Now, I want to settle that I am not dismissing what these models are doing with their bodies. I whol-heartedly believe that you can do whatever you want in life with your body, and no one can criticise you for that.

I am dismissing the idea of ‘page 3’ as a thing that still exists. This little objectification of women that we just ignore on a daily basis.

We talk about ending sexism and creating equality, but if we can’t agree on this then what happens next?

Also, can I just point out that The Sun is a family orientated newspaper. They hold competitions for CHILDREN and…

Croytopia: 10 reasons Croydon isn’t as shit as you think!

just wonderful. from an ex croydon girl x

Everyone Is Entitled To My Opinions

To many, Croydon is complete concrete mess where people get stabbed and riot on the reg. So what if I can’t walk home alone after dark? So what if they had to hire doormen for my block because people kept throwing petrol bombs in the lift? So you hear about stabbings a lot on the news? Well get this. Shitloads more happen, they just don’t make the news if the victim survives. Anyway, here are 10 reasons to change your opinion on Croydon!

1. The Wildlife – on the 8 minute walk from my flat to the station, I’ve seen shit loads of wildlife. Foxes, a bug infested discarded chicken box, and rats are a daily occurrence. But my personal favourite is the occasional tumble-weave (weave that got pulled out most likely in a lady fight) blowing in the wind that you might confuse for a dead bird.

Complaint to Paul Dacre chair of press code about Paul Dacre Daily Mail editor

How wonderful that the daily fail continues its factual reporting

Pride's Purge

(not satire – it’s the UK gutter press)

UPDATE: you can see the Mail’s reply – including veiled threats – here.

Mr Paul Dacre

Chair of the Editor’s Code of Practice

‘Independent’ Press Standards Organisation

Dear Mr Dacre,

I am writing to you in your position as chairman of the Editor’s Code of Practice to complain about you in your position as editor of the Daily Mail.

Specifically I am writing to complain about an article you commissioned in your own newspaper, the Daily Mail, in which you and your newspaper grossly maligned and bullied two young children, aged 3 and 6 years old.

Although the children’s faces were (poorly) blanked out in your article, the full identity of their parents was revealed so the identities of the two children were in effect not kept secret.

I therefore believe the article was a gross intrusion into the children’s right to privacy and…

Private companies tortured children – now running children’s homes and services

Pride's Purge

(not satire – it’s G4S and SERCO)

Private companies G4S and SERCO have agreed to pay out £100,000 in compensation for restraining torturing kids.

This illegal “restraining” by staff working for subsidiary companies belonging to the two multi-billion pound conglomerates has even resulted in the deaths of at least two children.

G4S went on to deal with the problem of the torturing and killing of children in their care by promoting one of the members of staff involved in it to the position of Health and Safety Manager in their children’s homes.

And Serco went on to allow its staff free range to also sexually assault young women who had been put in its care.

Considering all of the above shocking facts – why are we still allowing these cowboy companies to run children’s homes and our children’s educational services?

Could it be because they have friends in high places?

The Sun strikes again

As long as they keep trying to hurt women, we will never give up.

As long as they try to subvert men, we will never give up.

We’re all completely sick of hearing about women’s bodies in mainstream news… there are so many websites you can go to that will give you every kind of fetish/like/obsession/whatever so why is there a constant stream in the UKs media?

Simple sexism is why.
